Frequently Asked Questions

  • The care of a private concierge nurse after surgery generally results in a much smoother, more comfortable, less stressful recovery—often with improved surgical outcomes.

Patients are usually released home shortly after a surgical procedure, and those patients don’t always have an adequate support network available to support their recovery at home. There isn’t always a family member or loved one at home to offer that level of recovery support, and even the most well-intentioned loved one isn’t always physically or emotionally equipped to handle the unique needs of a recovering patient.

The first 24 hours after surgery are critical: Pain and nausea need to be assessed and controlled. Vital signs need to be monitored closely. Different surgical procedures require specific post-surgical positioning and limitations. Incision sites also need close attention and frequent dressing changes. If your procedure requires a drain, a concierge RN can closely monitor and calculate output.

Your RN will also communicate directly with your surgeon to keep them updated and to work through any concerns or changes in care. In short, you’re free to focus on the business of getting better, while your nurse handles everything else.

  • Even with support at home, a Serene nurse brings clinical expertise, hands-on care, and peace of mind. We provide the physical support needed for a safe, comfortable recovery, allowing your loved one to focus on what matters most—being present, supportive, and emotionally connected—simply there for you.

  • In short, we take care of whatever you need. First and foremost, your nurse will manage your overall comfort and wellbeing, taking care of dressings, medications, and drains. We coordinate directly with your surgical team to make sure every detail of your care plan is followed to the letter and keep them updated about anything they should be aware of.

We thoughtfully handle the everyday details of recovery—from running errands and medication pickup to meal preparation and light housekeeping—so you can relax in a calm, supportive environment. From personal care to daily tasks, we’re here to create the healing space you need to truly rest and recover.

  • Our nurses come to you. We can meet you at your surgical center to safely escort you home after your procedure, or meet you at your home, hotel, or Airbnb of your choice—we can even assist with arranging your stay! We pride ourselves on being flexible and accommodating, ensuring your recovery happens comfortably and on your terms.

  • Yes! All Serene nurses are licensed Registered Nurses in the state of California, with a wide-range of extensive experience in both acute hospital settings and personalized in-home care.

  • There’s no one-size-fits-all answer for this one! Many factors influence your level of need, including the intensity of your recovery, medical history, and the level of non-professional support you have at home.

We recommend scheduling a consultation so we can better understand your needs and we’ll create a care plan together—which could be a safe ride home after surgery with simple at-home setup, to days’ worth of round-the-clock focused concierge care.

  • We understand that recovery isn’t always a straight line. Everyone heals at their own pace, and you may find you need more support than initially anticipated. While we can’t guarantee availability, we will always do our best to accommodate your needs should you choose to extend your care.

  • You can begin the booking process in a couple of ways. The simplest way is to fill out our short intake form here on the website. We’ll review this form and send you a confirmation email within 1-2 business days. You can also call our business line at 1 (805) 710-9516 and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have and get you booked for aftercare.

  • Ideally, you should book as soon as you have your surgery date—the earlier, the better. This will allow us to make sure we can arrange the right level of personalized nursing coverage for you. We do accept shorter-notice bookings, but we can’t guarantee availability.

  • Actually, no! In the case of 24/7 overnight care, two nurses will handle your care in 12 hour shifts, so there’s always a fresh (and more importantly, conscious!) nurse available whenever you need.

  • We partner with many different surgeons from all over the county, from aesthetics to orthopedics and beyond. We’ll have an open, trusted relationship with your specific surgeon such as plastic surgeon, Central Coast Orthopedic Group, or general surgeon—so whatever you’re recovering from, you can rest easy.

  • We are a private-pay concierge nursing practice. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of your invoice that you can submit to your insurance—though we can never guarantee reimbursement. We are typically able to accept payment using FSA/HSA funds.
